Whale Watching
Humpback whales visit the tropical waters of Costa Rica for a longer period of time than they do in any other area of the world. Specifically Ballena Bahia(Spanish for Whale Bay) located in Uvita is the best place to see the whales and dolphins!
Each winter, about a thousand of these creatures, which typically reach lengths of up to 50 feet, make the 8,000-kilometer trek to Antarctica and grab a herring sandwich before heading north to Central America. They stay until spring arrives in the north again, with many of the females giving birth during that time.
While December through March is the best time to try to see the whales, July through November can also provide excellent opportunities.
